I am Joshua Chiang, a prolific Singaporean illustrator/writer/character designer/comic artist with many years working in the print and animation industry, and is now based in Siem Reap Cambodia. Currently ranked third in the fiction category of The Straits Times’s Weekly Bestsellers is my second graphic novel. It’s a mystery-adventure narrative set in 1950s Singapore about a letter-writer living in Chinatown whose ability to solve street-level mysteries gets him the nickname ‘the Five-foot-way Detective’. But when he takes on a case to help find a woman who seemingly disappeared at the end of the war, he quickly discovers there is much more at stake than the fate of the missing woman! My first comic book mini-series, completed in late 2020. It is a five-book love letter to chambara (samurai) movies of yore. Less anime and more Kurosawa with a bit of Sergio Leone (Italian spaghetti western director of The Good, The Bad, The Ugly) thrown in. I moved to Cambodia in 2014, and started selling my first Cambodia-inspired artprints and greeting cards in 2017 in selected retail outlets across the country. Some of my artprints are now amongst the most recognisable modern pop art about Cambodia. In April 2024, my wife and I opened our first shop in Siem Reap selling art and merchandise illustrated and designed by me.
